NORDEN Logo

The Swan symbol and the logotype Norden – the Nordic logo

A strong visual profile is an important part of the Nordic co-operation’s identity. The Nordic logo consists of two elements: The swan symbol and the logotype “Norden” or "Pohjola" in Finnish.

The correct and consistent use of the logo strengthens the Nordic organizations, institutions and projects by clearly showing the identity of the sender – both in Nordic and international contexts.
The logo must never be split up and no changes to its appearance are permitted. The logo may not be copied or used by outsiders. The logo may also not be manipulated by using different effects, and it must not be incorporated into other symbols or similar.

Who can use the Nordic logo?

The design manual, which contains the guidelines for the use of the Nordic logo, applies to:
- Nordic Council of Ministers
- The Secretariat to the Nordic Council of Ministers
- Nordic Information Offices
- Nordic Council
- The Secretariat to the Nordic Council and
- Nordic Cultural Fund

The logo must be used on all official publications from the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Nordic Council and the Nordic Cultural Fund. Other official Nordic institutions and co-operative bodies must also use the logo according to the design manual.

The Swan – the symbol of Nordic co-operation
The Swan symbol is a stylized white swan with eight quills in a blue circle. The swan symbol is encircled by a white ring.
The swan symbol must never be used alone, only as part of the logo. The logo is always used with the name of the organization when sent from a Nordic organization.
The Nordic Council of Ministers and Nordic Council introduced the “swan” as their official symbol in 1985. The swan with its eight quills represents the five Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, and the three autonomous territories - the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland.
The swan symbol was designed by the Finnish artist Kyösti Varis.

Logotype ”Norden”
"Norden" is the international common designation for the co-operation in the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Nordic Council. The logotype “Norden” has been designed by Due Design AS and projects a contemporary, simple and sturdy image.

Attitudes are what have to change in order for accessibility to be achieved
There is a great deal of interest among the Russian and Baltic participants on the course in Universal Design that begun on Monday at the Nordic School of Public Health (NHV). The discussions during lectures are lively and questions posed many from participants representing various sectors and agencies.
– The problem is to change attitudes so that those working for public institutions accept that these should be accessible for all, rather than it being an issue of lack of funding, says Andrey Zonin, Director for the Institute for Cultural Programs in St. Petersburg.
